How it works

perio tray

The PerioProtect non-surgery treatment uses a patented and FDA cleared device called Perio Trays. After a through examination, we take impressions of your teeth and gums. A PerioProtect licensed dental laboratory then constructs the Perio Trays form your custom prescription.

Specially prescribed medications are placed into the Perio Trays and then placed over the teeth and gums. The time and frequency the Perio Trays are used each day varies by the severity of the disease. The patented trays force the medications deep into the infected gums to reach and eradicate the harmful bacteria that are the cause of periodontal disease. Even in advanced cases, the treatment takes only minutes per day.

At your FREE initial consultation, Dr. Heidi will evaluate your teeth and gums, and let you know if PerioProtect is right for you.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Common symptoms of oral bacterial infections include the following :

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums (teeth appear longer)
  • Obvious plaque, tartar or calculus
  • Spaces developing between your teeth
  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Teeth are loose or mobile

Factors that contribute to gum disease include poor oral hygiene, irregular professional dental cleanings, smoking or chewing tobacco, certain medications, defective fillings, crooked teeth and systemic diseases.

Periodontal Disease is an infection

Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection. In the early stages, the disease infects the gum tissue. If left untreated, the infection will progress to the bone supporting the teeth. The end stage result is the loss of teeth.

n a healthy state, the gums around your teeth are tight, pink, do not bleed when they are gently probed, and there is little space between the gums and the teeth for bacteria to build up.

If the bacteria are not removed effectively, the first stage of gum disease is that your gums can start to bleed and may become red and swollen (gingivitis). This may not be readily visible, especially in between and around the back teeth, but the space between the gums and teeth becomes bigger. The bacteria now have somewhere to hide.

As the space (pocket) deepens, the bacteria change in nature and become more aggressive. Your body starts to fight this infection. The combination of the bacteria and your body's response to them, leads to a loss of the bone that supports the teeth.

Medical research increasingly shows periodontal disease may be linked to an increased risk of other serious medical problems, including heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.

The solution to the problem of gum disease that we use at Sun Dental is a state of the art system called PerioProtect.
