Crowns

A Crown will cap and protect your toothDental Crown

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.  A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.  They are used to repair broken or fractured teeth, decayed teeth and large or fractured fillings, as well as in the event that the tooth has required a root canal, or for cosmetic enhancement.

Porcelain (tooth colored) crowns are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Empress crowns are very realistic and are a very good choice for crowns in the front of the mouth.  Procera porcelain crowns are stronger, but less natural looking, and are a better choice for teeth toward the back of the mouth.   At Sun Dental, we use only high-quality, FDA approved porcelain materials for all of our crowns, and do our best to give you a well-matched, long-lasting crown.

Traditionally, crowns have required at least two trips to your dentist, the first to prepare your tooth for the crown and obtain the dimensions needed, and the second to place the permanent crown.  However, Sun Dental has invested in revolutionary E4D technology, a laser and computer-driven system which allows us to prepare and install your crown in just one visit.

Root Canals

Endodontics is that branch of dentistry which deals with diseases of the tooth root, dental pulp, and surrounding tissue. Dr. Sun and Dr.Heidi are very highly trained in this area, and have performed hundreds of endodontic procedures. We can accomplish 99% of all endodontic procedures right here in our Lakeport office.

We use cutting-edge instrumentation from Ultradent and Brassler to make sure that your procedure is expertly done.

One-visit root canals

In the past, root canals have always required at least two visits:   Once to remove the infected portions of the nerve and pulp, and a second visit to place a permanent crown on the tooth.  Using the latest E4D technology, Dr. Sun can perform a root canal and install your permanent crown in a single visit. He makes it a comfortable and pain-free procedure.

What is root canal therapy?

Root Canal TherapyRoot canal therapy is a procedure that is used to repair and save a tooth whose pulp is badly decayed or infected.

The pulp is the living part of the tooth made up of nerves and blood vessels. It can become infected or die through various reasons: decay, trauma, deep fillings or some unexplained reason.

During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Symptoms that a root canal may be needed:

  1. Swelling may occur around the tooth or deep in the jaw. A bubble can form on the gum tissue that is filled with pus and blood.

  2. Constant, moderate to severe tooth pain. The pain might feel like a dull ache or more intense as if the tooth seems to throb with every heartbeat.

  3. Severe tooth pain that feels better when something cold is applied to the tooth and increases when something hot is applied to the tooth.

  4. The pain is worse when you lie down and reduces when you are upright.

  5. Tooth pain that seems to make your head, ear(s), eye(s), or neck hurt as well.

  6. Pain when chewing or biting down on something. Even soft foods can seem to irritate the tooth causing soreness or severe pain.

  7. Tooth sensitivity to sweets.

  8. Pain that lasts for a long time after something cold is consumed.

There can also be no symptoms.

Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental ImplantA dental implant is a tooth replacement that feels and functions like a natural tooth. It is used where there are missing teeth. It is commonly composed of a titanium metal screw and a ceramic crown. Not only does a dental implant fill unsightly gaps in a smile, they are also important to deter bone loss.

Using technology for quality, comfortable treatment

To devise the best treatment plan for you, we first complete a medical and dental history and a thorough oral examination, including x-rays.

The placing of the post is performed in our office using a local anesthetic. Depending upon your individual situation, other types of anesthesia may be used to ensure your comfort.

The tooth restoration part of the dental implant (the crown) is made in Dr. Sun's lab using E4D technology (high-quality ceramic restorations) to create a tooth that matches your other teeth in shape and color.

E4D restorations are milled from a single block of high-quality ceramic, a substance which is particularly compatible with the body and has the same characteristics as normal, healthy dental enamel.

Is a Dental Implant right for me?

There are advantages to dental implants.  They prevent future bone and tooth loss, are permanently fixed, and won't loosen, and don't place any additional demands on adjacent teeth. Age is not usually a major factor; because successful dental implants have been performed on young people as well as the elderly.

During your initial consultation, we'll help you decide. In general, we look for the following characteristics: general good health, healthy gums, sufficient underlying jawbone to support the implants.

BridgesDental Bridge

A bridge is a device used to fill the space where a tooth has fallen out or been removed.  Dr. Sun uses advanced technology to create natural-looking, well-fitting bridges.

Why a bridge?

Spaces left by missing teeth affect the rest of your teeth. These gaps can cause chewing problems. If even one tooth is missing, other teeth may slowly shift out of place. This changes the way your teeth fit together. A poor bite may make your jaw sore. Your teeth may become harder to clean, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. And shifting teeth may change your smile.

A typical bridge consists of a pontic (a filler tooth) that is attached to two surrounding abutments (crowns). Once complete, this bridge structure is bonded into the mouth. Spaces in the mouth from missing teeth can cause multiple teeth to shift, lead to occlusion (biting) and/or jaw problems and spur periodontal disease. Bridges safeguard the integrity of existing teeth and help maintain a healthy, vibrant smile.

Is a bridge the best option?

All cases are individual, and Dr. Sun will help you decide if a Bridge is the best choice for you.  If the surrounding teeth have never been touched  and you are otherwise a good candidate, Dr. Sun is likely to recommend a dental implant instead. . A dental implant will function like a tooth root and keeps the supporting bone in place, preventing the bone from shrinking or moving.

Of course, not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Dr. Sun will do a full evaluation of your situation, and help you decide on the best treatment plan for your personal needs.

Dentures

Well-fitting, natural looking dentures

DenturesDentures and partial dentures are made to replace your missing teeth. Dr. Sun has many years of experience helping with dentures and alternatives to dentures. Whether you have an existing set of dentures that are giving you problems, or you feel that dentures may be the correct solution for you now,  Sun Dental can help.

We provide high quality full and partial dentures that will fit exactly, will be completely comfortable and without pain and that are stable and will not move around when you eat.

We can also solve denture problems you may be experiencing now with an existing set of dentures.

Dr. Sun can use implants to stabilize your dentures

Dr. Sun can use dental implants to stabilize your dentures. This has the added benefit of deterring bone loss. Loss of bone in your mouth can cause eventual difficulties with wearing dentures, jaw problems and even change the appearance of your face, giving a sunken look.

There are are various types of dentures available and Dr. Sun will recommend the type that will work best for your mouth, your expectations and your budget.

Our full and partial dentures are custom-made using quality materials that look natural and are durable. We ensure that they are the right shape, color and size for a natural look and that the bite (the way your teeth com together) is correct.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and OnlaysInlays and onlays are restorations that are fitted to a cavity in a tooth and bonded in place. For larger cavities they are stronger and more durable than a regular filling. They may be used to restore a broken tooth or may replace an existing large filling. They are used when the damage is not severe enough to require a crown.

If you have damaged or broken teeth, or potentially need large fillings, inlays and onlays can be a superior alternative to fillings or crowns. We use porcelain inlays and onlays made from a very durable material that has the same color as your natural teeth.

Thanks to advanced E4D technology, Sun Dental can now provide you with needed inlays and onlays in a single visit.
