Extractions and Oral Surgery

When would I need a tooth extraction?
You may need a tooth extraction for any one of a number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they cannot be repaired due to:
- severe decay
- advanced periodontal (gum) disease
- the tooth is broken in a fashion which cannot be repaired
- the tooth is poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted wisdom teeth)
- orthodontic treatment (braces) is needed.
Extractions may be required so that other teeth have more room to reposition.
Sometimes it's a matter of health. Impacted wisdom teeth, teeth associated with cysts or tumors, or teeth that are badly infected can make a person seriously ill.
By far, the most common reason for tooth extraction is that the patient is in pain and wants to relieve the pain as quickly, permanently and as inexpensively as possible.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Dr.Sun and Dr. Heidi can evaluate the placement of your wisdom teeth with an X-ray and determine if they might need extraction. Hopefully, your wisdom teeth aren't causing you any pain, but if they are, wisdom teeth removal may be inevitable. Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are commonly extracted during the late teens or early 20s. These teeth often get stuck in the jaw or come in crooked, crowding the other teeth. They may be decayed or irritating the gum, causing pain and swelling. An upper impacted wisdom tooth is very close to the maxillary sinus. Infection can sometimes be transferred to the sinus causing sinus headaches and congestion. |

After Extraction
When a tooth is missing, its neighboring teeth will tend to shift, which can have a major impact on your dental health. Even the removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and predispose the teeth that have shifted to problems. This tooth shifting will cause your bite to collapse and the unopposed teeth to start erupting again giving a roller coaster shape to your bite.
Before and after tooth replacement
The extracted teeth can be replaced by implants, bridges or removable partial dentures. Replacing extracted teeth promptly avoids the collapse of your bite and preserves your natural bite while keeping the cost and time to a minimum. Implants and bridges are fixed restorations that replace the extracted teeth and are the most durable, most esthetic restorations. Removable partial dentures can also be created.
